What is it written in? Silverlight, LightSwitch, Classic ASP, VB6, WinForms, Delphi, FoxPro, Access, SQL Server 7 — front end, back end and database if you know them. Versions help.

What does the system do for the business? In your words. "Runs the plant floor." "Prices bonds for the desk." "Every order goes through it." Rough size helps: users, tables, integrations.

What breaks when it goes down, or when nobody can change it? This tells me how urgent it is and what has to stay up during the migration.

If it is a fit, the first step is a short read of the code and database — a fixed, bounded piece of work that ends in a written specification of what the system does and what the migration would take. You keep that document whatever you decide.
