A Delphi inventory system built around location rather than quantity, with bar-coded shelving, early RFID tracking and press integration, that saved $15,000 a day in its first week and moved from Windows 95 to Windows 10 with a recompile.
What was wrong
A printed circuit board manufacturer was over-ordering and over-pulling raw cores, large copper-and-fibreglass sheets, and throwing the excess away. Losses had been running for ten years. Nobody could reconcile what was on the shelves with what the system said.
What I built
Every inventory system concentrates on what is in inventory; this one concentrated on where it was: shelving bar-coded section by section, so stock could be reconciled by sight and by system at once. Built when Amazon still only sold books. Also one of the first RFID tracking systems, and the integration of the shop-floor software with the press that fuses layers of copper and fibreglass under extreme heat.
What happened in production
In its first week it saved the company $15,000 a day in raw materials, a profit lift of over $3 million a month at the business end. The RFID work drew Tyco's attention and they acquired the company; I travelled to their other sites installing the software. It outlived every other program written alongside it and is still in use today.
