An in-house pump and turboexpander sizing program turned into a customer-facing service, designed so neither the calculation code nor the customer list ever left the company's own servers.
Every sizing request from a customer went through the company's own engineers, because the sizing program was an internal desktop tool and its calculation code was the company's crown jewels.
A web front end for customers that hands each request to a pool of machines running the existing sizing program behind the scenes, with a watchdog keeping them healthy. Customer logins are generic, and the link from login to company exists only inside the internal system, so neither the calculation code nor the customer list is ever exposed to the outside.
Customers size their own machines. Deployed 2014 and in use for the decade after.
