The problem the business had

The localisation team needed to author subtitles against video, and the encoding farm behind them was failing inside the codec and returning nothing usable. An operator could not tell a finished encode from a crashed one, so work was being lost without anyone knowing.

What was done

The subtitle authoring tool: a master subtitle list beside each language, cloning a master set into a language that has none, video playback with the audio waveform for syncing, and placement inside the safe areas of the frame. Wrote and repaired the encoding pipeline so failures are caught and reported instead of swallowed.

What it returned

Both delivered and in use. The encoder was proved against seven deliberate failure cases before it went back on the farm.
